When It’s Time to Replace Your Ducts

Adequate ductwork is essential to optimal Nashville, TN HVAC efficiency. So, what kind of shape is yours in? Of course, it’s not easy for you to check this, as ductwork isn’t typically accessible—installed in places like your attic or crawlspace. Fortunately, that’s what we’re here for. If your air ducts need to be inspected, repaired, or even replaced, our highly trained and experienced technicians are here for the job.

After all, breached and leaky ductwork is a hidden problem behind many HVAC and indoor air quality issues. Therefore, it’s a good idea to be well informed of the symptoms that suggest you have damaged ductwork. So without further ado, we’ve shared some tips below on what sort of indicators you can watch out for that suggest it’s time to replace, or at least repair, your ductwork.

Signs of Breached Ductwork

As we mentioned above, leaky air ducts are often a hidden problem. Something like a broken down compressor or a refrigerant leak is generally more obvious, and of course serious. Leaky ductwork, though, isn’t going to immediately lead to an inoperable air conditioner or heater in most cases. So you need to know what the warning signs are before the problem is allowed to grow.

  • Poor Efficiency: Have you noticed you’re paying more and more to heat and cool your home? Naturally, you’ll see fluctuations in your energy bills depending on the season, depending on how much you’re using either of your systems. But if you see unexplainable spikes in your bills, despite comparable use to last year, then you’re likely losing air through breached ductwork that needs to be repaired or replaced.
  • Reduced Indoor Air Quality: When you have leaky ducts, it’s not just the loss of conditioned air you should be worried about. It’s what is able to get inside those ducts. We’re talking about dust, dirt, pollen, and other allergens and contaminants. The infiltration of these particles can make you and your family sick—and you may not even realize that fixing your ductwork is the solution to improving your health!
  • Uneven Heating or Cooling: If your air conditioner or heating system used to function and operate just fine, but is no longer capable of conditioning your home evenly, it could be due to the fact that sections of your ductwork is leaking. Uneven temperatures is certainly something you should never have to deal with when using a centralized air conditioner, furnace, or heat pump—so even if your ductwork isn’t to blame, you should still give our pros a call.

So as we mentioned, you may be able to get by with duct repair. Now, before you rush out to your nearest hardware store and buy a role of duct tape, please know that this material is not aptly named, and can’t actually hold up on your ducts as they fluctuate in temperature.

What you need instead is professional duct sealing, and potentially even portions of your ductwork replaced. Or, we may find that your entire ductwork system needs replacement, which we can handle for you!
