Do You Need a Heat or Energy Recovery Ventilator?

You may wonder what the point of utilizing an ERV or HRV system would be—after all, you could just open a window to let fresh air in, right? But this isn’t a practical solution when it’s freezing outside and you have your heating system running, or when it’s hot outdoors and your AC is on.

In fact, it can create issues for your HVAC systems as they’ll struggle to heat or cool a space that’s much larger that the system can handle. Our team lives by our motto of "Dedicated to the Promise of Serving You," and we look forward to helping to improve your home comfort!

How Do HRV and ERV Systems Work?

An HRV system allows for fresh air to come into your home without the heat gain or loss that you’d experience by opening a window. In the wintertime, incoming fresh air is brought in with the assistance of a fan. First, it passes by a heat exchanger. The heat from the stale air, which gets exhausted outdoors, transfers to the fresh air coming it. In the summer, this process is reversed as heat from the incoming fresh air gets transferred to the air leaving the home.

Efficiency isn’t affected very much at all with the use of an HRV, or an ERV for that matter. The energy recovery ventilator works much in the same way of an HRV. The difference, however, is that an ERV system can also transfer moisture (humidity) along with heat.
